NSGA Individual Sports Participation Reports

         Order Report

The NSGA Sports Participation research program, done annually, is designed to measure the number of individuals seven years of age or older who participated in each of a number of different sports within the previous year. That research is published in separate reports, one providing individual tables on each of the sports surveyed; a second providing state-by-state data; and the last looking at the LifeCycle demographics of participants.

Data from these three reports have been assembled in a single report for each of 25 sports and leisure activities. The 25 sports/activities are: aerobic exercising, backpacking/wilderness camping, baseball, basketball, bicycle riding, billiards/pool, bowling, camping (vacation/overnight), dart throwing, exercise walking, exercising with equipment, fishing (fresh and salt water). Also included are football (tackle), golf, hiking, jogging, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and yoga.

Individual Sports Participation Tables measure the annual number of participants in each sport, the frequency of participation (number of days of participation in 2008), total days of participation, and the average (mean) number of days of participation. The Individual Sports Tables are generated for selected demographics, including gender, age, mean age by gender and frequency of participation, education of male and female household heads, household income, market size, census region, and race/ethnicity.

LifeCycle Segments by Sex, Age, Region and MSA Market Size uses the LifeCycle segmentation system developed by Ipsos-Insight to analyze sports participation in the continuum from affluent singles to seniors. Households are classified into various life stages using demographic criteria. For each group, a frequency distribution, an index of participation vs. lifecycle segment and selected demographics are provided.

Households are classified into one of five mutually exclusive segments, with each segment divided into two or more subgroups. The 12 classifications are: Affluent Singles; Low/Middle Income Singles; Double Income/No Kids (DINKS); Working Parents; Single Parents; Affluent Traditional Families; Low/Middle Income Traditional Families; Affluent Empty Nesters; Low/Middle Income Empty Nesters; Single Active Seniors; Married Active Seniors; 75+ Seniors.

State-by-State provides data on total U.S. participation, participation by individual state, frequency of participation (frequent, occasional and infrequent) by total U.S. and by state, total participation days by total U.S. and by state, and mean number of days by total U.S. and by state.

Each report, covering calendar 2008, is approximately 20 pages in length.
