federal trade commission cracks down on patriot puck over "Made in the USA" claims

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 12, 2018) - The Federal Trade Commission cracked down on hockey puck seller Patriot Puck over deceptive American-made claims, which included "100 % American Made," made on its website and in other areas on-line. But according to the FTC, Patriot Puck imported more than 400,000 pucks from China since January 2016.

Patriot Puck and four affiliated New York companies claimed they sold "The only American Made Hockey Puck!," and that it was "100% American Made!," 100% Made in the USA!" and "Proudly Made in the USA."

Patriot Puck respondents have signed a proposed consent order that prohibits misleading or deceptive U.S.-origin claims for its products unless it can show the final assembly or processing - and all significant processing - occurs in the United States. Virtually all ingredients or components have to be made and sourced in the U.S. The consent order leaves open the opportunity to make carefully qualified Made in the USA claims, but they must include a clear disclosure about the extent the product contains foreign parts, ingredients or processing.
