MOUNT PROSPECT, ILLINOIS (May 21, 2015) – Education, innovation, recognition and inspiration made the National Sporting Goods Association’s 51st Annual Management Conference and 17th Annual Team Dealer Summit a success on May 3-6 at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas.
Baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. and popular golf commentator and writer David Feherty provided entertaining and inspiring speeches to start the Monday and Tuesday sessions, respectively, for attendees from the retail, team dealer and manufacturing sides of the sporting goods industry.
The presentations by Ripken and Feherty were followed with educational sessions from experts on subjects such as retail best practices, using social media, attracting younger talent into the industry, the importance of change and time management. Dustin Dobrin, the NSGA Director of Research, also unveiled the findings from the association’s first study of the behaviors of the sporting goods shopper.
“Our goal every year with the Management Conference and Team Dealer Summit is to leave a lasting impression on everyone who attended, not only in business, but their daily lives,” said NSGA President & CEO Matt Carlson. “This year’s program was another big hit and the components we added were well-received and enhanced the value for our attendees.
“It is always exciting to see long-time friends have the opportunity to get together and to see our first-time attendees start to develop important business relationships.”
The inaugural NSGA INNOVATIONS ARENA gave 21 companies the opportunity to showcase new sporting goods products or retail technology products to industry executives. The INNOVATIONS ARENA was endorsed by Daymond John, one of the stars of the “Shark Tank” TV show. Dean Donlon, the Director of Sports & Activation for John’s Shark Branding, was in attendance at the event.
There was a new twist to the third annual NSGA Tennis Clinic on Sunday morning at the Conference & Summit as 32 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area spent more than an hour learning about the sport from club professionals. The participants received Wilson tennis rackets, tennis balls and other gear to keep and Pro Feet made a $500 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area.
“The INNOVATIONS ARENA brought a lot of energy to the Management Conference and our attendees showed a lot of interest in learning more about the products and companies,” Carlson said. “We were thrilled with the turnout we had from the kids at this year’s Tennis Clinic. We hope it will inspire these kids to keep playing tennis and to stay physically active.”
NSGA appreciates the support of all of the Management Conference sponsors. W.L. Gore and Mizuno sponsored the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Mueller Sports Medicine and Russell Athletic sponsored the Team Dealer Summit. Other Management Conference sponsors include – SPS Commerce, Stahls, ASG SouthWare, Formula4 Media, GoodSports, Holloway Sportswear, OrderMyGear, Sword & Shield Enterprise Security, Wilson, Bancard Systems, D & H Distributing, Gared, McDavid and TeamUniformOrders.

NSGA announces today the appointment of Jeff Miller (Scholastic Sports Sales, Ltd) to its Board of Directors. This announcement is made following the annual Board of Directors meeting during the Conference & Summit. Miller will serve a three-year term which began June 1, 2015.
“We are pleased to add a member to the NSGA Board whose organization has such a deep history in the industry,” said Matt Carlson, NSGA President and CEO. “We are excited about Jeff’s enthusiasm to contribute to the Board and the Association.”
Jeff Miller is the Owner/President of Scholastic Sports Sales, Ltd., a sporting goods dealer that has been family owned since 1974, and has over 100 years of team sporting goods experience. “Now that Scholastic Sports Sales is transitioning into its’ third generation of ownership, it is humbling to have the opportunity to serve on the NSGA Board of Directors,” said Miller. “I consider this appointment to be a small way for me to give back to an industry that has allowed the Miller family to be a part of it for over 41 years.”
Salvador Colom (Deportes Salvador Colom) reached the end of his term of service on the NSGA Board.
"We would like to thank Salvador Colom for his board service and insight,” Carlson said. It has served us well and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Deportes Salvador Colom."
